14TH ASANTEHEMAA OFFICIALLY OUTDOORED
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, has
formally outdoored the successor of the late 13th Asantehemaa, Nana
Afua Kobi Serwaa Ampem at a ceremony at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
She is
83-year old Nana Ama Konadu with her stool name as Nana Konadu Yiadom The
Third.
Nana Konadu Yiadom, who is the eldest child of the late Asantehemaa and
elder biological sister of Otumfuo Osei Tutu, now becomes the 14th
Asantehemaa. Otumfuo Osei Tutu used the occasion to explain the reason for the
selection of his sister to succeed his late biological mother.
According to the
Asante Monarch and 16th occupant of the Golden Stool, Nana Konadu
Yiadom’s selection was in line with long standing Asante tradition by which the
eldest surviving daughter of a deceased Asantehemaa is the first option in the
selection of a successor.
Therefore, the choice of Nana Konadu Yiadom was
without much difficulty. Otumfuo Osei Tutu appealed for the support and
cooperation of all, particularly members of the chieftaincy institution for the
new Asantehemaa to succeed.
The Asantehene named a successor for the late Nana
Afua Kobi Serwaa Ampem in February this year during the 80th Day
traditional rite of her death.
At the same ceremony which coincided with the 67th
birthday of the Asantehene, was used to dedicate and inaugurate a refurbished
ceremonial ground at the Manhyia Palace and christened Nana Afua Kobi Serwaa
Ampem Memorial Park in memory of the late Asantehemaa.
The Park has an
artificial pitch with the walls decorated with portrait of the Asantehene
sitting in state as well as the Adinkra symbols and will be used to host some
of the official programmes of the Asanteman and the Kumasi Traditional Council.
