NEAR FISTICUFF AT KMA PRESIDING MEMBER ELECTIONS
KMA Members swore their Oath before election of their PM |
There was near fisticuffs at the first
Meeting of the newly re-constituted Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly held at the
Miklin Hotel in Kumasi.
This was at the balloting for placement prior to the
election of a Presiding Member for the Assembly.
Two of the candidates, Nana
Kofi Senya and another candidate, Amoako Asante, attempted to swap their
ballots without the approval of the Electoral Commission officials who were
supervising the process.
This unauthorized move did not go down well with some
of the Assembly Members, who considered the clandestine move as an irregularity
and collusion among the two candidates.
The aggrieved Members therefore openly
confronted the candidates involved, necessitating a swift intervention of
security operatives who were already around to ensure a peaceful inauguration of
the Assembly and election of its Presiding Member.
Afterwards, Mr. Asante
withdrew from the contest. In all, six members of the new Assembly contested
for the Presiding Member position.
They are Nana Kofi Senya, the immediate past
Presiding Member, Baffour Agyei Kesse, Adumhene and Government Appointee, and
Michael Bonsu, Assembly Member for Dadiesoaba.
The others were Nana Yaw Wiredu
of Ahinsan Estate, and Amadu Gariba of Anloga. After the first round of voting,
Baffour Agyei Kesse polled 52 votes, Nana Kofi Senya, 46, Michael Bonsu, 27, Amadu
Gariba, two, while Nana Yaw Wiredu had four votes.
The two candidates with the
highest votes, Nana Kofi Senya and Baffour Agyei Kesse went into a run-off.
However, none of them could poll the two-thirds majority.
The Electoral
Commission officials therefore rescheduled the election to the 16th
of this month, during which one of the candidates is expected to win the polls
to become the new Presiding Member.
With the Assembly’s failure to elect its
Presiding Member, the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Michael Ataogye is mandated
to act as Presiding Member and Chair the Assembly’s meetings.
Meanwhile, the reconstituted
Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has a total of 147 members made up of 91 elected
members with Dichemso yet to elect its representative, 42 Appointees, 10
Members of Parliament and the Metropolitan Chief Executive.
Only four of the
elected members are women, while government has appointed 10 more. Forty-one of
the members of the old Assembly were retained while 50 of the old Assembly have
been replaced with new ones.
