KUMASI IS TOO CHAOTIC

Mr. Kojo Bonsu-Mayor of Kumasi
For any new visitor to the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, to conclude that the nerve centre of trade and commerce is chaotic or messy would be understatement.

Talk of busy areas of the city such as Kejetia, Central Business District of Adum, ‘Dr. Mensah’, Roman Hill, the Central Market and Unicorn House areas and just one thing will come to mind; who is in charge?

Residents and visitors to the city have expressed worry about the situation and, through Ashanti Today call for the intervention of the city authorities to deal with the mess.

The redevelopment of the Kejetia Terminal appears to have worsened the messy environment.

Traders have taken over the steel footbridge too
Traders have taken over virtually every space of the main business areas from Allah Bar to Roman Hill, from Central Market to Kejetia, From ‘Dr. Mensah to K.O, from Suame Roundabout to the Zoo, Bantama, then from Kejetia to Adum proper.

Motorists are also having a hectic time getting an approved place to load or off-load passengers.

Some of these problems have resulted from the delay in the re-constitution of the KMA, which is the highest political authority, with the mandate to regulate and facilitate social economic development of the entire Kumasi metropolis for sanity to prevail.

At the recent inauguration of the 147-member re-constituted KMA, a former Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant-General S.K. Obeng did not mince words when he told the Assembly members that their core responsibility is to the electorate of their respective Electoral Areas.

Even though the Assembly Members appear to know too well their duties and have promised to serve the people to the best of their ability, they seem to be drenched in partisan politics.

A charge to keep you have-Assembly Members

The Assembly is sharply divided along two political lines, pro-government and opposition, who are bent on frustrating the system.

That is what is bedeviling the election of the next Presiding Member for the highest political authority in the metropolis.

This development if not resolved within the shortest possible time, can draw back the metropolis’ socio-economic development.

For now, the battle is between Nana Kofi Senya, the immediate past Presiding Member, and Baffour Agyei Kesse, the Adumhene who is also a former Presiding Member of the Assembly.

One of them has to win two-thirds majority of the 147-member Assembly to become the Presiding Member.

This is what has become extremely difficult, considering the entrenched stance taken by the two opposing sides. Residents of Kumasi are watching with keen interest.
