TEARS FLOW AS GHANA ENDS 3-DAYS OF MOURNING

It was all tears, wailing and sobbing as relatives and loved ones of victims of the June 3 flood and fire disaster in Accra participated in a national Memorial Service in honour of those who died at the forecourt of the State House to end three days of national mourning for them.

A number of the participants of the Memorial Service could not hold back their tears as a number of them, mostly women clad in the traditional black and red mourning apparels appeared on national television screen shedding tears in some instances, uncontrollably.

The well attended event brought together people from all spheres of the society including politicians, the judiciary, clergy, the Diplomatic Corps, relatives, friends and loved ones.

The event was marked with sessions of christian and muslim prayers and exaltation by the the Founder of the Fountain Gate Church, Reverend Eastwood Anaba.

Reverend Anaba, who himself is a sufferer of a catastrophe following the tragic death of his two daughters through a road accident about two years ago, urged Ghanaians to be show genuine concern and care during this trying period of national life.

People must as well show love and care for the victims and bereaved families of the victims.

In a message, President John Dramani Mahama disclosed that a total of 152 people lost their lives through the twin disasters and hoped that no more dead bodies would be retrieved from the remnant of the disaster.

President Mahama repeated the fact that government has already set up a 50 million Ghana Cedi fund to cater for relief items for the victims and medical expenses for the hospitalized.

According to the President, hospitals where unclaimed bodies remain will carry out DNA tests on the bodies to ascertain their true identity for the families to claim them.

He said very soon, the names of the dead will be released to the public for remembrance.

He thanked all those who played a role in one way or the other during the disaster for their selflessness and sacrifices for the cause of humanity.

President Mahama commended also neighbouring countries both in Africa and beyond for the love and concern shown to Ghana so far.

He disclosed that so far the government of Togo has donated a cash of 50 thousand Dollars and medications while Senegal has donated 150 thousand Dollars towards management of the disaster.
