GHANA MUSLIMS MISSION UPSET WITH STATE AUTHORITIES
The Ghana Muslim
Mission has called on city authorities in Kumasi, to as a matter of urgency
halt the construction of a fuel filling station behind the girls’ dormitory
block and kitchen of the Islamic Senior High School at Bohyen in Kumasi and a
gas filling station in front of the school’s main gate.
According to the
Mission, the two developments, if not halted, could be a recipe for disaster
especially against the three thousand 400 student population and over 200
school staff.
Addressing a news conference in Kumasi, the National Vice
Chairman of the Ghana Muslim Mission and Board Member of the Islamic Senior
High School, Dr. Mohammed Duah said a check at the Lands Commission has
revealed that the fuel station owner has no title to the land being used for
the purpose, while both the fuel and gas filling station developments have been
sited in flood-prone areas.
He said state institutions have disregarded efforts
by the Ghana Muslim Mission and Management of the Islamic Senior High School to
them to stop these potential disasters.
Dr. Duah said for instance that the
school about a year ago, registered its displeasure in an official letter to
the Environmental Protection Agency and to protest against the construction of
the gas filling station just a few metres from the school.
Series of reminder
letters had been written to the Agency, with copies sent to the Ashanti
Regional Minister, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Regional and
Metropolitan Directors of Education.
In response, the EPA and city authorities
conducted intensive assessment of the impact the gas filling station might have
on the school.
Dr. Duah said however
that a directive to the owner to halt further development of the project have
fallen on deaf ears.
He reminded the EPA and city authorities to be mindful of
the series of gas and fuel explosions witnessed in the country of late and
ensure that they do not allow the interest of an individual to supercede that
of the majority of residents, particularly students of the Islamic Senior High
School.
