INSTITUTE OF JEWELRY AND TECHNOLOGY FOR TEPA

  The Paramount chief of Tepa in Ashanti region, Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem, has handed over to President John Dramani Mahama legal documents covering a 40-acre parcel of land reserved in the traditional are for the establishment of the proposed Institute of Jewelry and Technology. 

The government is yet to initiate negotiations with the management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KUNUST, on the modalities for the successful construction of the Jewelry Institute. If eventually established, the Institute of Jewelry and Technology will primarily add value to gold ore mined in Ghana for enhanced marketability before exports. 


he handing over of the land documents was at Tepa during a grand durbar of the chiefs and people from Tepa and Maabang which are neighbouring traditional areas,  in honour of President Mahama as part  of the President’s two-day working tour of the Ashanti region. 

President Mahama noted that he will very soon enter into negotiations with the KNUST on how to make the proposed Institute come to fruition to become the centre of excellence in value addition to the precious mineral. 

The President was confident that Ghana would gain much from the gold it exports if value is added. 

Touching on other socio-economic development, President Mahama explained that his government has come up with the Cocoa Roads Project which is to construct a significant number of feeder roads connecting cocoa growing areas in six of the regions by the end of 2019, in recognition and appreciation of the huge contribution of cocoa to the macro economy.

 In the Ahafo North district with Tepa as the capital, President Mahama mentioned the Tepa-Goaso, Tepa-Bomaa, Manso- Subriso-Fante as well as the Anyinasuso-Abonsuaso roads as some of the road networks which have already been awarded on contract for construction under phase one of the Cocoa Roads Programme. 

The Paramount Chief of Tepa, Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem, expressed the profound gratitude of the chiefs and people of the traditional area to the government for the numerous development projects being undertaken in the area. 

These are in the areas of formal education, health, trade and commerce. Nana Atwenewa Ampem was particularly grateful to President Mahama that,  for the first time in the political history of Ghana, a native of the traditional area in the person of Peter Anarfi-Mensah has been appointed as a Minister of State.  

 But for the official tour to the region, Nana Atwenewa Ampem disclosed, the chiefs had planned to go to the Flagstaff House in Accra to show their sincere appreciation to the President for the gesture. 

Nana Atwenewa Ampem  however, appealed to the President to ensure completion of the Tepa Jubilee Market started by the late Professor John Evans Atta-Mills.

 President Mahama visited the site where a 60-bed new District Hospital is being built at a cost of 36 million Dollars.

 He was told by the Project Manager, Atakora Amaniampong that the project is currently 70 percent complete and assured that it will be completed by the end of August next year.

The once Industrial enclave of the Ashanti region within the Kumasi metropolis is fast losing its status as the nerve centre of jobs for the people.     This is due to the collapse of most of the companies in quick succession in  the last few years for various reasons. New Campus of the Kwamang Presby SHS The Kwamang Presby Senior High/Technical School in the Sekyere Central district of Ashanti needs an urgent external intervention to address some of its pressing basic needs to function very well.  A visit by Ashanti Today to the school’s premises revealed that the school does not have an administrative block to administer affairs of the school for which reason the Headmistress, the Bursar and another staff are sharing one room which has been partitioned, while the Assistant Headmaster, the rest of the Accounts staff among other administrative officers are also working from an improvised classroom.
