Twenty-one first

District of Ashanti have benefitted from a scholarship package under the
Government’s Secondary Education Improvement Project.
The beneficiary students,
made up of 13 females and nine males, are each receiving 500 Dollars a year for
three years to cover the payment of all school bills, PTA levies and other
educational needs.
They are among two thousand 300 needy but qualified students
who have benefitted from the scholarship package for the 2014/2015 academic
year.
A symbolic ceremony to present the scholarship package to the beneficiary
students of the Jacobu Senior High Technical School has taken place at Jacobu,
which was performed by the Amansie Central District Chief Executive, Dede
Appiah.
He explained that the Government has secured a 156 million Dollar loan
facility from the World Bank as part of the President’s commitment to construct
200 community day senior high schools nationwide.
The aim is to expand access
and improve quality in education delivery at the secondary education level over
the next five years.
Mr. Appiah said the Secondary Education Improvement
Project will involve the construction of 23 new senior high schools, upgrading
of facilities and quality improvement in 50 existing SHS and improving quality
in 75 existing SHS.
The DCE said the package has several components which
include scholarship for needy but qualified students, school facility upgrade
and capacity building for teachers in ICT, mathematics and science so that they
can deliver for performance improvement.
The Headmaster of Jacobu Senior High
Technical School, Yao Agorsor expressed gratitude to government for including
the school among the 50 secondary institutions earmarked for facility upgrade
and quality improvement.
He said several workshops have been organized for
management and staff of the school to have an in-depth knowledge about the
implementation procedure.
Mr. Agorsor gave the assurance that he and the staff
would ensure that the scholarship beneficiaries and all students progress in
academic succession.
The District Director of Education, J.K. Agyemang advised
parents of the beneficiary students not to shirk their responsibility even
though their wards have been awarded scholarship.
He reminded the students that
the scholarship package is based on merit and can be terminated upon poor
performance.
They should therefore study hard to justify benefiting from the
scholarship.
