FMR PRESIDENT KUFFUOR EXPRESSES REGRET ABOUT THE ACCRA DISASTER

Former President John Agyekum Kuffuor has urged government to take advantage of the disaster in Accra last Wednesday to take and implement bold and pragmatic policies and projects that will perpetually address the perennial flooding that lead to the loss of human lives and properties in the national capital.

More than 175 people have been confirmed dead through the disaster caused by flooding and explosion at a fuel service station at near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra last Wednesday.

According to the former President, too much lip service has been paid to finding lasting solutions to the problems that cause flooding anytime it rains in Accra.

He noted with regret that as a people, Ghanaians have behaved like the proverbial vulture which only promises to construct its permanent shelter only when it is being beaten by the rain.

However, it forgets about that plan as soon as the rain subsides and it regains strength only to suffer the same problem another.

This, Mr. Kuffuor deplored and called for actions by the powers that be now.

Speaking to Angel Fm, a private radio station in Kumasi in a show of solidarity with the bereaved families and the nation as a whole, the former President said it is about time government confronted the issue of storm drains construction as well as the demolition of buildings in water ways head on even though some members of the society may complaint.

According to him, even though it is very necessary to consider human rights and public safety, the interest of the larger society must be prioritized in whatever national decision is taken.

Mr. Kuffuor noted that politicization has often times influenced the implementation of such critical and crucial decisions.

He recalled a similar problems his administration faced when certain hard decisions projects were being implemented in the national capital with the good intention of advancing the cause of the society.

The former President disagreed with the school of thought that it is about time the national capital was relocated.

He observed that in about 10 years time, the human population of Accra alone could hit about 10 million.

This then requires foresightedness, proactiveness and long-term planning by the powers that be so with the view to addressing the challenges that are likely to accompany such population growth to avert disasters of last Wednesday’s magnitude.
