The
Ghana Association of Biomedical Laboratory Scientists has organized a free
health screening exercise for chiefs and sub chiefs at the Manhyia Palace as
well as other traditional leaders including queens from Kumasi, as part of
activities to commemorate this year’s edition of the International Biomedical
Scientists Day.
About 200 of the targeted traditional leaders patronized the
exercise.
They were screened for their blood sugar and cholesterol levels and
prostate cancer.
After going through the screening, the chiefs were also
educated on the implication of their respected test results and advised on how
to lead healthy lives or avoid complication in their conditions.
In an
interview, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Association of Biomedical
Laboratory Scientist, Dr. Michael Owusu explained that the exercise aimed also
to create public awareness to go for regular medical checkups to update
themselves of their health conditions to prevent getting complicated or stay
away from particularly the non-communicable diseases.
Dr. Owusu explained that
traditional leaders were targeted due to the fact that as opinion leaders in
their respective communities, they can better influence their people to seek
regular professional medical checkups in the national efforts to promote
quality health to engender higher productivity.
He commended the chiefs for the
significant interest shown in the exercise.
Touching on the role of biomedical
scientists in the healthcare delivery system, Dr. Owusu emphasized that
laboratory technicians remain one of the most important players in the sector,
saying that without them, medical doctors would always resort to trial and
error on patients, since their diagnosis and prescriptions would be without any
accurate findings of patient’s health conditions.
