UNEASY CALM AT CSUC
There
is an uneasy calm among students of the Christian Service University College in
Kumasi as a result of moves by the authorities to force them to wear prescribed
uniforms for lectures.
While the administration is determined to fully
implement the new policy latest by the start of the next academic year, the
Student Representatives Council as well as most of the students who spoke to Ashanti Today have shot down the idea.
Already, students of the Bachelor of
Business Administration Department have been asked to put on light blue over
black shorts or skirts for Mondays and Tuesday and also white shirt over black
shorts on Wednesdays.
The Dean of Students of the school, Linda Amoako, at a
recent interaction among the Senior Management staff and students, disclosed
intentions of the administration to introduce school uniform for all the
students but would not add any detail.
In a follow up at an annual forum of the Department of Communication
Studies, the Head of Department, Asuamah Adade-Yeboah initiated the formation
of a Committee of students to recommend the preferred school uniform for
students of the Department.
Speaking in
an interview with Ashanti Today, Mr. Adade-Yeboah explained that the new measure
is part of plans by the university’s management to ensure decency among the
students in the their dressings, particularly the women.
According to him, even
though the university has prescribed a dressing code in the Student Handbook,
the directive is being flouted by some of the students at the expense of the
core values of the university, which is an evangelical institution that seeks
to instill in its students and staff moral and professional uprightness and
integrity.
Mr. Adade-Yeboah noted that the management has involved the SRC in
the steps to introduce school uniforms and hoped that the policy would help to
promote decency in the students’ dressing.

However, when contacted, the President of the SRC, Aikins Mpianin Asare, noted that the SRC is only aware of plans to enforce a dress code for the students, adding that the SRC will not agree to a school uniform policy.
According to him, if a school uniform is
introduced, the students will be seriously inconvenienced, particularly the
workers, some of who already have their work place dress code.
Beside this, Mr. Mpianin Asare noted also that the school uniform will only be a matter of colour which would not necessarily correct the provocative dressing of the female students.
He therefore urged the university’s management to strictly
enforce the existing dress code instead of compelling the students to wear
school uniforms.
