GHANA LOSES RIGHT TO GABON

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has eventually  handed Gabon, the hosting right of the next edition of the African Cup of Nations, AFCON, soccer competition.

The President of CAF, Issah Hayatou made the announcement at the Confederation's headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, yesterday as part of the Ordinary Congress underway in the Egyptian capital.

Gabon was contesting for the 2017 AFCON hosting right with Ghana and Algeria.

Two members of Ghana's Bid Committee, Randy Abbey and Fred Papoe have both been reported by the local media as having complained about the non-transparent manner the voting of the selection of the host was done.

They believe Ghana had won the votes of a majority of the 14-member CAF Executive Committee to get the host right.

Ironically, their compatriot and Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of the 2008 AFCON held in Ghana, Dr. Kofi Amoah, has reportedly described Ghana's lost of the hosting right as  a blessing in disguise.

He is reported to have described Ghana's bid as a misplaced priority considering the prevailing social and economic situation of the country.

The development means Ghana can have another opportunity to bid for the AFCON hosting right only after 25 years considering the fact that the rights for 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023 have all been awarded already.
