FOOD VENDORS FOR COURT

The Food Hygiene Unit under the Department of Environmental Health of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is set to prosecute some food vendors in Kumasi for turning deaf ears to several warnings to refrain from selling cooked food in unhygienic environment conditions.

The culprits are said to be trading cooked food in such deplorable conditions as close to refuse dumps, public toilet and along gutters.

Five of such alleged recalcitrant women will soon be arraigned in a Court in Kumasi.

According to the Chief Environmental Health Officer, Alhaji Adam Sumaila, those who have been arrested will be used as scapegoats to deter recalcitrant food vendors to adhere to regulations governing their trade so as to prevent or reduce the incidence of avoidable diseases.

Alhaji Sumaila explained that since the inception of the Food Hygiene Unit in October 2017, the staff have been educating food handlers on food hygiene and laws on food selling which has encouraged about three thousand food handlers to register.

He indicated that the office is in dire need of a vehicle to enable the staff to carry out their mandate satisfactorily.

Alhaji Sumaila advised consumers to be careful about the food items they patronize so as to avoid contracting diseases.
