FIRE DESTROYS MORE THAN 26 PRIVATE VEHICLES AT ASOKWA

A fitting shop near the Ashanti regional offices of Food and Agriculture at Asokwa was this morning gutted by fire leading to destruction of property worth several thousands of Ghana Cedis. Eighteen vehicles have been burnt beyond repairs with about nine others partially damaged by the fire.

Also destroyed are a generating set, newly procured vehicle spare parts meant for the repair of vehicles that had been brought there for maintenance and a tools room which doubles as the Mechanic Apprentices changing room.

An intervention by the Ghana National Fire Service from Kyirapatre and KMA helped to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby mechanic shops and also saving other vehicles within the affected shop from the destruction.

A Night Watchman at the affected mechanics shop, Godwin Bayeti, told Ashanti Today that the fire started at about 12.30 this morning and is believed to have begun from the tools shop.

He said his attention was drawn to the fire by a friend who first saw it.

Bayeti noted that upon realising the intensity of the flames, he raised an alarm to draw neighbours to the scene while distress call were made to the Fire Service who arrived with two fire tenders late.

One of the four Master Mechanics, Thomas Gamali, said the actual cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Service.

He said some of the vehicle owners are aware of the disaster and have since gone to witness the misfortune.

According to Mr. Gamali, even though he bears responsibility for the cost of the destruction, some of the car owners have already indicated they would not surcharge him.

A Lecturer at the KNUST whose Benz salon car was partially destroyed, Professor Kwasi Preko, said he needs to raise about two thousand Ghana Cedis to repair his car. He said he is ready to bear the entire cost.
