AHWIAA VIOLENCE- THREE BUTCHERED ON THE BLIND-SIDE OF SECURITY DETAIL
Three more residents of Ahwiaa in the Kwabre
East district of Ashanti have been attacked and severely injured by assailants
yet to be identified and arrested.
According to the Kwabre East District Chief
Executive, Nana Osei Bonsu, the attack happened last night on the blindside of
security personnel detailed to the town to restore peace and security during
the rains.
The injured, he noted that have been sent to the Komfo Anokye
Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for emergency medical care.
Speaking to Ashanti Today, Nana Osei Bonsu said the assailants allegedly
stormed the houses in which the victims live and visited cutlass wounds on them
after which they bolted. The DCE asked basic schools in the town to remain at
home, at least for today, Tuesday March 20, while efforts are made to restore peace and security
in the town.
Nana Osei Bonsu refuted claims that the latest violence is a
sequel to last month’s incident saying that that issue was comprehensively
managed to avoid a spill over.
He assured that everything possible will be done
to arrest the perpetrators to face the law and also maintain peace and security
in the town.
Meanwhile, the Police in Ashanti have arrested 48 persons in connection
with the deadly violence that broke out at Ahwiaa yesterday.
Confirming this to Ashanti Today, the Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional
Police Command, ASP Juliana Obeng, said one person has been confirmed dead
after been attacked by the irate residents of Ahwiaa with about two others with
serious injuries.
The corpse and the injured are at the Ankaase Methodist Faith
Hospital. According to ASP Obeng, the police are yet to unravel the actual
reasons for the insecurity which erupted yesterday morning.
She said a combined
team of police and the military is on the ground to restore peace and security
to the township for people to go about their lawful activities.
The latest
violence at Ahwiaa follows a similar incident in the town last month which was
occasioned by a misunderstanding between youth from the Zongo community and the
local people during a brassband music that preceded the funeral for a deceased
lady.
