TAKE CAUTION AGAINST WILD FIRES-GNFS

The Ghana National Fire Service has advised members of the public to take extreme precaution from now, to avoid or reduce to the barest minimum the incidences of fire outbreaks as the harmattan begins to intensify.

They must as well take steps to identify for correction any defects with their gas cylinders in the case of households, and put in place emergency plans including the acquisition of fire extinguishers and contacts for the Fire Service so as to receive swift responses to deal with any domestic wildfire.

Station Officer, Alexander Addo Korang of the Safety Department of the Ashanti Regional Head Office of the Ghana National Fire Service who gave the advise during an interview with the GBC in Kumasi, noted with regret that a significant number of cases of fire outbreaks recorded in the region in recent times are attributable to poor handling of naked fire or mishandling of electrical gadgets in the home.

Station Officer Addo Korang hinted that the recent wild fire that destroyed about 200 wooden structures at a popular slum at Asawase near Kumasi could be blamed on a lit candle, adding that another domestic fire that claimed the lives of two children at Esereso early last year also resulted from bad handling of a candle.

Giving statistics on the fire outbreak situation in the Ashanti region, Station Officer Addo Korang disclosed that the cases of wild fire recorded in the region astronomically shot up from 810 in 2014 to one thousand, 198 in 2015 and about one thousand, 350 last year, destroying property valued at several thousands of Ghana Cedis.

These were in the areas of domestic, industrial, car and market fires. He blamed the rising cases of fire outbreaks in the region on multiple factors including urbanization, mishandling of naked fire and late distress calls to the Fire Service for response.
