WAEC BLAMES GES FOR EXAM MALPRACTICES
The Kumasi Area Controller of the West African
Examinations Council, WAEC, Alex Boapem Bosompim, has blamed the Ghana
Education Service, GES, for the continuous blatant involvement of officials in
examination malpractices during external exams in the country.
According to
him, the GES has over the years failed to apply punitive sanctions against the
numerous offending examination invigilators and Supervisors who officiate
WAEC-organized examinations.
Speaking to Ashanti Today in Kumasi, Mr. Bosompim
explained that, most of the Supervisors and Invigilators engaged by WAEC to
ensure smooth examinations are staff of the GES.
For this reason, anytime any official
is caught in a compromising situation in the conduct of external exam, evidence
and the culprits are referred to the GES to apply the appropriate sanctions.
However, there has been very little done over the years to deter potential culprits
thereby emboldening successive exam officials to get involved in exam
malpractices. 'I told School Heads at my meeting with them before the WASSCE that any teacher who tries to compromise credibility of the exam must be sent to the psychiatric hospital for brain examination', the WAEC Kumasi Controller lamented.
The WAEC Controller said already this year, information are being
gathered that similar cases of malpractices involving some Invigilators
attempting to smuggle foreign materials to the examination centres with the aim
of assisting some of the candidates in answering the exam questions.
Evidence
is being gathered to make a case against those alleged to be involved for the necessary
remedial actions to be taken. Meanwhile, a total of 74 thousand, 626 candidates
are writing this year’s West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examinations,
WASSCE.
The figure is made up of 37 thousand, 415 girls and 37 thousand 211
boys with 176 schools including privately ran ones presenting candidates.
Mr.
Bosompim disclosed also that 132 Centres are being used for the exam across the
Ashanti region but said some Centres have been given external Supervisors and
Invigilators to protect credibility of the exam.
The WAEC Area Controller
explained that schools which have credibility problems have not been allowed to
use their internal staff to officiate the exam.
This year’s WASSCE began on the
3rd of last month with Practicals and some Elective Subjects.
All
the candidates are scheduled to write their 1st Core Paper on
Thursday, the 12th of this month while the entire exercise comes to
an end on the 15th of next month.
