ONLY TWO WOMEN WON IN NPP'S ASH DEL. CONGRESS
Only two of the women aspirants at the
Ashanti Regional Delegates’ Congress of the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP,
won their respective positions.
They are Nana Ama Ampomah who retained her
position as the Women Organizer and Hajia Zeinab Sallow, who was elected as the
new regional Treasurer.
A total number of 909 delegates of the NPP from 46 out the
47 constituencies in the region were expected to be present to vote at the Congress
held at the premises of the College of Agric, Ejura in the Ejura-Sekyedumase
constituency.
Information gathered by our correspondent had it that delegates
from the Adansi Formena constituency could not be part for a reason yet to be
ascertained.
Eventually, 883 delegates were present to vote. Also voting were
the Members of Parliament in the region, members of Council of Elders, Patrons,
TESCON among other affiliate organs of the party operating in the region. Ten
substantive regional positions were up for grab by the 40 aspirants.
However,
two of these slots were not subject for voting as then incumbent Regional
Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako affectionately called Chairman Wontumi, and
also the Regional Secretary, Samuel Pyne, a professional teacher at the Kumasi
Anglican SHS, were not contested, as their respective contenders backed out of
the contest days before the congress. There were only four women among the
candidates.
The congress was under the supervision of the acting first National
Vice Chairman of the party, Fredrick Frefuah Anto with a team of officials from
the Electoral Commission led by the Regional Director, Serebour Quarcoe responsible for the conducted of the voting
process.
The process was under heavy security presence involving personnel of
the Ghana Police Service and the party’s internal security.
Despite some minor
skirmishes minutes after voting had ended, the atmosphere was free, fair and
transparent. Among the keenly contested positions were those of the Woman Organizer,
1st Vice Chairperson, Youth Organizer and Organizer.
After the long
wait, the Electoral Commission official declared Mr. Antwi Boasiako as the
regional chairman, Mr. Nsenkyire, the present Regional NADMO Director, 1st
Vice Chairman, Sam Cudjoe, a former Regional Secretary as the new 2nd Vice
chairman and Sam Pyne as the Regional Secretary.
The other elected executives
are Adom Appiah as the Assistant Secretary, Dr. Francis Adomako as Organizer
and Salim Bamba as Nasara Coordinator.
The only two women who won their contest
are Nana Ama Ampomah who retained her portfolio whiles Hajia Zeinab Sallow was
chosen over Fredrick Addai as the Treasurer.
After their declaration, F.F. Anto
sworn them in to start their four year term. Later they will appoint the Deputy
Organizer, Deputy Youth Organizer, Communication director and the Financial Secretary
to make up the complete Regional Executive Committee.
One of the women victors,

that the contest was a difficult one but trusted God to provide her the victory
she won. She said the work toward retaining NPP in power after the 2020
elections has just begun and pledged to unite the rank and file of the party in
the region towards that victory.
