ONLY TWO WOMEN WON IN NPP'S ASH DEL. CONGRESS

Only two of the women aspirants at the Ashanti Regional Delegates’ Congress of the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP, won their respective positions.

They are Nana Ama Ampomah who retained her position as the Women Organizer and Hajia Zeinab Sallow, who was elected as the new regional Treasurer.

A total number of 909 delegates of the NPP from 46 out the 47 constituencies in the region were expected to be present to vote at the Congress held at the premises of the College of Agric, Ejura in the Ejura-Sekyedumase constituency.

Information gathered by our correspondent had it that delegates from the Adansi Formena constituency could not be part for a reason yet to be ascertained.

Eventually, 883 delegates were present to vote. Also voting were the Members of Parliament in the region, members of Council of Elders, Patrons, TESCON among other affiliate organs of the party operating in the region. Ten substantive regional positions were up for grab by the 40 aspirants.

However, two of these slots were not subject for voting as then incumbent Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako affectionately called Chairman Wontumi, and also the Regional Secretary, Samuel Pyne, a professional teacher at the Kumasi Anglican SHS, were not contested, as their respective contenders backed out of the contest days before the congress. There were only four women among the candidates.

The congress was under the supervision of the acting first National Vice Chairman of the party, Fredrick Frefuah Anto with a team of officials from the Electoral Commission led by the Regional Director, Serebour Quarcoe responsible for the conducted of the voting process.

The process was under heavy security presence involving personnel of the Ghana Police Service and the party’s internal security.

Despite some minor skirmishes minutes after voting had ended, the atmosphere was free, fair and transparent. Among the keenly contested positions were those of the Woman Organizer, 1st Vice Chairperson, Youth Organizer and Organizer.

After the long wait, the Electoral Commission official declared Mr. Antwi Boasiako as the regional chairman, Mr. Nsenkyire, the present Regional NADMO Director, 1st Vice Chairman, Sam Cudjoe, a former Regional Secretary as the new 2nd Vice chairman and Sam Pyne as the Regional Secretary.

The other elected executives are Adom Appiah as the Assistant Secretary, Dr. Francis Adomako as Organizer and Salim Bamba as Nasara Coordinator.

The only two women who won their contest are Nana Ama Ampomah who retained her portfolio whiles Hajia Zeinab Sallow was chosen over Fredrick Addai as the Treasurer.

After their declaration, F.F. Anto sworn them in to start their four year term. Later they will appoint the Deputy Organizer, Deputy Youth Organizer, Communication director and the Financial Secretary to make up the complete Regional Executive Committee.

One of the women victors, Nana Ama Ampomah told Ashanti Today that the contest was a difficult one but trusted God to provide her the victory she won. She said the work toward retaining NPP in power after the 2020 elections has just begun and pledged to unite the rank and file of the party in the region towards that victory.
