VIP SUPPORTS KMA WITH TRUCK, TRICYCLES
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA, will
next month launch a city-wide operation to provide litter bins at vantage
points throughout the metropolis to encourage responsible rubbish disposal
among both residents and visitors.
The exercise forms part of an initiative of
the Chief Executive, Osei Assibey Antwi, code-named ‘Keep the City Clean and
Green’ to restore Kumasi to its former status as the Garden City of West
Africa.
Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi made this known in Kumasi when he received on
behalf of the KMA, a six-wheeler truck and four brand new tricycles popularly
known as Aboboyaa valued at 500 thousand Ghana Cedis from the VIP Transport
company.
The machines are part of the transport company’s contribution towards the
operation ‘Keep the City Clean and Green’.
The Metro Chief noted that the
initiative has so far received very encouraging support from both the corporate
world and religious groups some of which have made substantial contributions in
both cash and kind.
According to him, as a result of its strategic geographic
location, Kumasi receives an average of one point-five million visitors on
daily basis who either come to transact business or make transit.
These
visitors, Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi noted, also contribute to the huge volumes of
wastes generated in the city.
He therefore entreated transporters who convey
such people to the metropolis to provide waste collection bins in their respective
vehicles to collect rubbish generated by the passengers.
The drivers and their
mates should as well constantly educate their passengers to properly dispose of
their wastes to keep both the vehicles and the environment clean always.
Mr.
Osei Assibey appealed to individuals. Corporate institutions and groups to
support the waste management initiatives with logistics and any other relevant
material for its success.
The General Manager of the VIP, Adakabre Frimpong
Manso, disclosed that the company transports an average of 500 thousand
commuters to and from Kumasi every month.
These passengers, he admitted, also
generate significant wastes.
Mr. Frimpong Manso noted also that despite paying
taxes to the KMA, the city authorities have contributed to the success of the
company in its 10 years of operation hence the donation of the waste collection
truck and the tricycles. These are meant to boost efforts by the KMA to keep
Kumasi clean.
