LEADERSHIP FAILURE, CORROSIVE CORRUPTION BANE OF AFRICA- DR. AWUAH
President of the Ashesi University, Dr.
Patrick Awuah, has traced Africa’s under development and myriad of challenges
to leadership failure riddled with what he calls ‘corrosive corruption’.
To
address the problem to propel the continent to leap-frog in its
development, there is the need to deliberately nurture a new generation of
critical thinkers, inventors and innovators imbued with quality leadership to take advantage of technological advancement.
Dr.
Awuah was giving the key note address at Pakyi in the Ashanti region at the
opening of the Africa Regional Round Square Conference.
Round Square
is a world-wide organization of about 150 schools that share in the work of a
philosopher and educationist, Kurt Hahn.
The three-day Conference being held in
West Africa and for the first time, is on the theme: “Leadership in the Service
of Africa.”
It was participated by high school delegates and teachers from
about 25 member schools from across Africa including the Opera Winfrey Girls
Leadership Academy in South Africa.
During the period, carefully selected
Ghanaian inspirational leaders spoke on chosen topics to inspire the
young delegates to become responsible and effective leaders in their future
lives.
The President of Ashesi University, Dr. Patrick Awuah, noted that, as
the population of Ghana and Africa is bound to, at least double in the next 30
years, the likely repercussions for the people include scarcity of certain essential
resources such as water that could lead to conflict.
According to Dr. Awuah,
the worsening phenomenon of climate change being caused by harmful human
activities requires that the continent consciously develops the next
generation to think on their feet in providing cutting-edge solutions for
society.
'In 1980, Ghana had a Revolution because the economy was so bad. That year, the average Ghanaian was worthier than the average Chinese citizen. Today, it's different.
The thing that change was a Chinese Leader took a positive direction. Bin Jao Kim decide to move to a more market-based economy. ...today, the story is different.'Dr. Awuah noted.
The Representative of the Chief Executive of the Round Square initiative, Jane
Howison, said many schools across the world are joining the group to benefit
from its ideals which include community service and leadership.
