'GIVE PROPONENTS AND PROTAGONISTS EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES'-TOGBE AFEDE


President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede, has called for a fair, transparent and an equal playing field for all interested parties in the conduct of Referendum towards the creation of new regions on the 27th of this month. 

He advised particularly traditional leaders in the areas where the exercise will take place to consider first, peace, security and unity of the people in all their activities geared towards the event by allowing both proponents and the protagonists to undertake their campaigns. 

Togbe Afede who gave the advice in Kumasi stressed that, Ghanaians expect to continue to enjoy peace regardless of the outcome of the referendum. "A fair, transparent conduct of the Referendum would enable all sides to accept the outcome to sustain the peace", he stressed. He was addressing the last General Meeting of the National House of Chiefs. 

At the General Meeting were delegations from the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Local Government and Rural Development as well as from the Chinese Embassy in Ghana which briefed the chiefs on matters of national interests. 


The Chinese Embassy, led by the Ambassador, Shi Ting Wang, presented electronic gadgets valued at 20 thousand Dollars and a cheque for 20 thousand Ghana Cedis. The items included 10 desktop and two laptop computers, one server machine, two scanners, external hard drives, 10 antivirus software and two air conditioners towards the launch of the House’s digitization programme as well as human resource capacity building of its members.

 Also, the Paramount Chief of Yamfo in the Brong Ahafo region, Nana Ansah Adu Baah, was sworn in by the Kumasi Supervising High Court Judge, Justice Efo Kaglo and the President of the House, Togbe Afede to become the newest member. 

The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Kofi Dzamesi, disclosed that government has budgeted for 65 million Ghana Cedis to resource the Judicial Councils of the chieftaincy institutions at all levels to settle the numerous chieftaincy conflicts in the country. 

Additionally, government has opened tender for the procurement of 25 new vehicles for distribution among the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs next year to help them in the performance of their mandates.

 Touching on the roadmap towards a lasting peace in Dagbon in the Northern region, the Minister noted that implementation of various plans in the road map is ongoing without any hitch so far adding that, there are adequate security arrangement in place to the success of it.
