KMA SUSPENDS PARTIAL ROADS RE-OPENING OF KEJETIA TERMINAL
The
Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA, has suspended indefinitely the much
publicized partial re-opening of the roads to and from the newly built Kejetia
terminal complex.
Last week, the KMA issued a statement through the media
announcing its decision to clear part of the temporary fence around the project
to allow motorists use the premises as a thoroughfare ahead of the Christmas
festivities from yesterday, 16th of this month. The plan, the KMA
explained, was to avert escalation of the human and vehicular congestion and
any possible negative consequence on life and property during the yuletide.
Speaking
to Ashanti Today in Kumasi, the Public Relations Officer of the KMA, Godwin Nyame, noted however, that officials of the Assembly encountered an undesirable
situation around the terminal complex last Saturday when they went to assess the readiness of
the place for the partial opening of the roads when traders and hawkers invaded the place.
The
situation, according to Mr. Nyame, was enough 'indication of the public’s lack
of appreciation of the intentions and decision of the Assembly.' The indefinite
suspension of the planned partial re-opening of the Kejetia roads is therefore
to enable the KMA and its officials to undertake further and enhanced public
awareness creation about the intention to allow vehicular passage through the
new project.
The KMA’s PRO insisted that, the schedule was 'never to open the
Kejetia terminal complex for use for business as was misconceived by the
traders and hawkers who trooped to the project vicinity last Saturday wanting
to acquire spaces for themselves to continue with the businesses.'
He said the KMA
had scheduled an emergency meeting today, Monday Dec 17, to take a definite decision on the
matter and the way forward towards creating a congenial atmosphere for
everyone, whether as a resident, trader, hawker or visitor to go about their
normal lawful business before, during and after the festivities.
Mr. Nyame has
therefore urged members of the public to be patient with the Assembly to devise
pragmatic means of addressing their concerns.
