TUC URGES NCCE TO EDUCATE CITIZENS ON SDGs

The Acting Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress, Joshua Ansah has called on the National Commission on Civic Education, NCCE, to intensify awareness creation among Ghanaians on the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those that are relevant to all unions.

Among them are Goal Eight, Decent Work, Goal Five, Gender Equality, and Goal 16, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. He said as the state agency responsible for civic education, the NCCE holds it as a responsibility to reinforce the accountability of the implementation process in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Staff of the Commission should also collaborate with other like-minded stakeholders to monitor and evaluate the key Sustainable Development Goals that should be based on transparency and consultation.

Mr. Ansah was addressing the Third Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the NCCE Staff Union Division of the Public Services Workers Union, in Kumasi. It was under the theme, “The Sustainable Development Goals and Decent Work – The Role of the Civic Educator”.

Mr. Ansah said the conference is coming off at a time where job creation continues to be a major challenge facing policy makers in the country, despite almost 30 years of economic growth.

He said even though per capita GDP has seen remarkable progress from one thousand 600 Dollars in 2017 to about two thousand Dollars this year, this has not generated enough decent jobs for Ghanaians.

Mr. Ansah warned that the high unemployment rate among the well-educated youth remains the greatest threat to the country’s social and political stability. He however gave assurance that the TUC will continue to advocate for better wages, benefits and working conditions that guarantees quality life for workers.

The Acting General Secretary of the Public Services Workers Union, Bernard Adjei expressed disappointment that the NCCE is still financial resource constrained. He therefore called on relevant state authorities to provide a fair and adequate budget to the Commission that will enable it to deepen engagement with the public on important national issues towards the creation of a civic-oriented citizenry.

The Acting Chairman of the NCCE Staff Union Division, Justice Awittor called for cordial relationship between the union and management to ensure a good industrial environment.
