NEW POLIO VACCINE OUT ON FRIDAY

The Ghana Heath Service is to introduce a new vaccine into the routine immunization throughout the country at every health facility on the first of next month.

The new vaccine is Inactivated Polio Vaccine, IPV, which is to be given to every child for extra protection.

At a media briefing in Kumasi, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of Health Services in charge of Public Health, Dr. Kwasi Yeboah-Awudzi explained that the IPV is an injection which will be administered on the right thigh of the child at 14 weeks after birth.
This will be alongside the Oral Polio Vaccine, Pentax.

He indicated that IP Vaccination is a critical step towards achieving a lasting polio-free country.

Dr. Yeboah-Awudzi said the vaccine is also safe and effective whether given alone or in combination with other vaccines, adding that it is being used in over 60 countries worldwide.

According to Dr. Yeboah-Awudzi, some children may react mildly to the vaccine. Commonest among the side effects are swelling and tenderness at injection site, as well as irritability.

In a related development, Dr. Yeboah-Awudzi, has advised the general public to be wary of unscrupulous people administering Hepatitis B vaccines to the unsuspecting public in the Kumasi metropolis.
