NINTING GETS RELIEF AT LONG LAST
The
Chiefs and people of Ninting in the Mampong Municipality of Ashanti have
thanked the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah, the Ghana Highways
Authority and the Ashanti Today for the intercessory roles
they played in responding to calls for the erection of speed ramps in the town
to control the speed of vehicles to save lives of residents and visitors.
Speaking
to Ashanti Today, the Head of the Ninting Royal Family, Nana Adu Asare, said
following the distress calls by the people using various strategies including a
broadcast by the Ashanti Today, the Ghana Highways Authority last Friday, May 11, dispatched its
workers to the town to build concrete speed ramps at strategic portions of the
main Kumasi-Mampong road.
According to Nana Adu Asare, it took the GHA staff up
to about 11 pm on the day in question to fix the problem without taking any
money from the chiefs and people.
He commended the Regional Minister for acting
swiftly on a petition by some citizens of the town such as the Medical Director
of the Tema General Hospital, Dr. Kwabena Opoku Adu, and a member of the
Government’s Communications Team, Ben Arthur, who is also a civil engineer, to
get the Highways Authority to place premium on the situation.
Nana Adu Asare thanked
the Ashanti Today also for showing keen
interest and highlighting the plight of the people and bringing it to the attention
of duty bearers.
He noted that with the erection of the speed ramps, the people
would be less worried about their safety and that of their children while using
the road compared with the situation in the past.
Ninting, which lies just
after the Asante Mampong Scarp from the Kumasi direction of the road, has been
plagued by high cases of pedestrian knockdowns by speeding motorists resulting
in the death of about 46 persons and various degrees to many others in the last
three years.
This caused an agitation among the opinion leaders and the
residents to find a solution to protect their lives.
Meanwhile, Nana Adu Asare
has assured citizens of Ninting that proceeds realized from a recent levy on
each household for purposes of constructing the speed rumps will be used to
re-activate the street lighting system which has been dysfunctional for some time
now.
This, he noted, would also help in improving the security situation of the
town.
