GENDER MINISTRY WORRIED ABOUT HIGH TEENAGE PREGNANCY RATE

A recent Ghana Demographic Survey conducted by the Ghana Health Service has revealed a steady rise in teenage pregnancies in the country.

It also revealed that teenage pregnancy is higher among uneducated girls than the educated.

The Deputy Sector Minister, Mrs. Della Sowah announced this at a sensitization workshop on teenage pregnancy in Kumasi.

She said the percentage of teenagers giving birth in Ghana recorded by the research ranges from six per cent to 22 per cent, with the Ashanti Region recording 12 per cent.

She said the alarming statistics has brought to the fore, the need for Government to prioritize sexual and reproductive health issues especially among the youth.

It is in this respect that her Ministry, with the support of the African Development Bank has embarked on sensitization workshops for districts with the high rate of teenage pregnancy including Accra, Kumasi and Techiman and Sekondi Takoradi to drastically reduce its incidence in the country as a whole.

Mrs. Della Sowah mentioned a complication associated with teenage pregnancy as fistula, while the teenage girl may go through frustration as she would not be able to take on the responsibility of motherhood.

She therefore cautioned teenage girls not be carried away by the whims and caprices of young men to lure them into engaging in sexual intercourse, which can later land them into disgraceful situations.

Mrs. Sowah also urged parents and guardians of teenagers to ensure that their female wards are enrolled and stay in school.

The Principal Nursing Officer at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Mrs. Faustina Osei Mensah emphasized that abstinence from sex is the best choice for teenagers who want to secure a productive future.
