KSI PRISON ESCAPE; OFFICIALS STILL SHOCKED!

Officials at the Kumasi Central Prisons are yet to come to terms with how a remand inmate of the Prisons escaped from custody on the 3rd of this month without any trace of the escape route.

Up till now, the Prisons staff are still in shock even though they consider the incident, said to be the first since the construction of the facility, as a mystery considering the fact that, despite several checks after the escape, both colleague inmates and Wardens cannot fathom how the unfortunate incident took place, especially, when the Cubicle in which the fugitive and about 50 other remand prisoners were being held remains very intact, while all the other occupants are still around.

Speaking in an interview with Ashanti Today in Kumasi,  the Public Relations Officer for the Kumasi Central Prisons, DSP Richard Bukari, described the escape of the man who was on a two-week remand from a court, as mind-boggling, considering the fact that, the room-mates of the escapee have confirmed that 'he was with them throughout the day and night prior to the incident and that they are also wondering how the man had vanished when they woke up the following morning without any sign of his escape route.'

DSP Bukari said, even though record show that, the last time a prisoner escaped when they were sent to perform labour outside is about 50 years now, 'no inmate has ever escaped from inside the facility while under strict guard.' The PRO noted that 'the regional Command of the Service considers the incident regrettable and accepts full responsibility for the matter and are therefore fully cooperating with investigations' being conducted concurrently by three different Committees to unravel circumstances relating to the escape.

The Prisons Command remains very committed to its core mandate of ensuring safekeeping of both convicted and remand persons brought into the facility', DSP Bukari assured.

He therefore appealed to members of the public to remain calm and confident in the command as everything humanly possible is being doing, in partnership with other security services in the region, to recapture the escapee to face justice.
