KEJETIA TERMINAL UNDERGOING TESTING
Contractors
executing the new Kejetia Terminal Complex say the facility is
97 per cent complete and currently at the
testing stage. Traders and transport
unions
are expected to occupy the terminal very soon.
These came to light when the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles visited the
facility. Construction the new Kejetia terminal
complex began in November 2015 with an original completion date of 18 months.
However, completion has delayed as a result of the refusal by the original occupants
of the old facility to relocate for fear that management of the edifice would give out to the spaces based on favouritism while owners of private properties located within the project area dragged the issue at the law courts until early this year.
The complex is phase one of a comprehensive Central Market redevelopment
and has a bigger trading capacity than the earlier terminal. The new terminal
is being built by the government of Ghana with a loan facility from the Brazilian
government and being executed by Contracta Engineering limited, a Brazilian
construction firm.
It has eight thousand lockable stores and vehicle loading
bay for all 24 transport unions that used to do business at the original terminal.
Currently, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA is validating registered
traders who were relocated from the previous terminal to other places and some traders at the Central Market to allow for a demolition of the Market
for reconstruction.
The new enclosed and air conditioned terminal has almost
every modern social amenity required to make doing business comfortable. Among
these are police and fire service stations, a Creche, Food Court and a
Clinic.
The traders who spoke to the Ashanti Today expressed delight at the facility and also were
satisfaction with the terms of their relocation back to trading
area. Two of them, Madam Afia Serwaa, and Nana Yaa Dufie who also assured
of their readiness to help the management to maintain it to keep it for a longer period.
The Community Liaison Officer of Contracta Engineering, Emmanuel Danso,
noted that with work on this project almost complete, plans are on course for
commencement on the second phase of the project, which is the main Central Market
next year.
