NO TRADER WILL LOSE LIVELIHOOD-KMA ASSURES

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA, says all obstacles delaying completion of the new Kejetia Terminal Complex in Kumasi have been cleared paving the way for the project contractors to complete the work. Prominent among such impediments was a legal tussle over the demolition of a private storey building, of which case the Court has ruled in favour of the KMA.

The Assembly will very soon start an exercise to verify and validate all original legal occupants of the erstwhile Kejetia terminal to facilitate re-allocation of the new shops and stores to operationalize the multi-million Dollar facility.

Addressing the media in Kumasi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Osei Assibey Antwi, said the emphasis in the re-allocation of the new shops and stores at the terminal complex will be the traders who were re-located to the Adehyie and Acheamfuour Markets.

Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi noted that some of the traders at the Central Market will be re-located to remaining spaces at the new Terminal Complex as part of steps towards commencement of the re-development project of the Kumasi Central Market.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive disclosed that Parliament has approved a loan of 248 million Euros for the entire Central Market Project from which the first tranche of about 93 million Euros is ready for disbursement.

Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi noted that the project, which will be executed in phases, will commence before the close of this year. The project, he assured, will cater for all the deficiencies identified in the new Kejetia Terminal including expanded terminal for transport operators and open Stalls for petty traders.

Towards this end the KMA will register all present traders who have legally acquired stores and shops at the Central Market after which they will be re-located to satellite trading centres spread across the city for the construction works to begin.

He assured that 'no legitimate trader at the Central Market now will lose business because of the project.' He warned that the KMA would re-possess all unoccupied trading spaces at the refurbished Race Course anytime soon if the beneficiaries refuse to occupy them.

Mr. Osei Assibey asked all hawkers doing business at unauthorized places especially within the Central Business District to re-locate to the Race Course or face forcible eviction through a continuous decongestion of the city.
