GHANA GETS HARMONIZED POULTRY VACCINATION PROTOCOL
The
Veterinary Services Division of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the
Ghana Poultry Project have developed and released a national harmonized
Protocol for vaccination in poultry towards effective risk management and
optimization of production in the local poultry production.
At a forum in the
Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti region to sensitize poultry farmers to
the relevance of the Protocol to disease management on their farms, a
Veterinary Surgeon and Vice Chairman of the Veterinary Council, Dr. Jonathan
Amakye-Anim, described the harmonized vaccination protocol as a monumental
achievement towards the fight against the Gumboro and New Castle diseases
plaguing the industry.
Poultry production in Ghana has over the years been
plagued by mostly viral and bacterial infections that cause disease outbreaks.
The commonest of such diseases have been the Newcastle, Gumboro, Fowl pox and
recently, the Avian Flu which when break out on a poultry farm usually result
in higher fatality among the birds.
Even though it is globally acknowledged
that strict application of disease-prevention management techniques at the farm
and trade level are fundamentally important in minimizing the risk of disease
introduction to poultry farms, vaccination by farmers and experts have been
very haphazard, hence the difficulty in finding lasting solutions to most of
the disease outbreaks.
It was against this background that the United States
Department of Agriculture through the Ghana Poultry Project in partnership with
the Veterinary Services Department of Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture,
set out to develop a one-stop national vaccination Protocol for the local
poultry industry.
Dr. Amakye-Anim cautioned that despite the national
harmonized vaccination schedule, poultry farmers could only realize the full
benefits when they adhere to other equally important management practices such
as biosecurity, medication and sanitation.
The Chief of Party of the Ghana
Poultry Project, Madam Carianne de Boer, noted that the Harmonized National Poultry
Vaccination Protocol is yet another demonstration of the Ghana Poultry Project
and the United States Department of Agriculture’s partnership with the Ghana
government and private sector to drive the local poultry industry growth in
particular, and the country’s overall development agenda.
