TOGBE AFEDE QUESTIONS 275 BUSES ACQUISITION
The National House of Chiefs has waded into the controversy surrounding the
aspiring National Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party, NPP, Freddie
Blay’s acquisition of a band new urvan bus for each of the 275 Constituencies
of the party in the country.
President of the House, Togbe Afede, questioned
the source of funding and motive for the gesture and suggested that the Office
of the Special Prosecutor takes interest in the matter. Addressing members of
the House at their 3rd General Meeting in Kumasi, Togbe Afede, who
is also the Agbegbomafia of the Asogli State, noted that the frequency of
corruption allegations tends to minimize and erode public trust in the
authority and also affect public corruption perception.
Present
at the National House of Chief’s General Meeting were the Ministers of Chieftaincy
and Culture, Kofi Dzamesi and Gender, Children and Social Welfare, Otiko Afisa
Djaba as well as a delegation from the Ministry of Energy led by the Deputy
Minister, Dr. Amin Anda, who used the opportunity to brief the paramount chiefs
on various government initiatives for national development.
The President of
the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede, who doubles as the Agbogbomafia of
the Asogli State, lamented about the high incidence of corruption in Africa and
Ghana in particular where, according to him, about three point-eight billion
Dollars is lost to corruption every year.
Togbe Afede expressed regret in the
apparent apathy that traditional leaders have, and continue to show in the
country’s efforts at eliminating or reducing the canker of corruption, which,
according to him, is the bane of under development and dependency of the
country while depriving the people of their basic life’s necessities.
He noted,
that if the chiefs had been bold enough to criticize the NDC in the
construction of its national headquarters about three years ago, the Acting
National Chairman of the NPP, Freddie Blay, would not have acquired buses for
distribution among all 275 constituencies of the party at this time. "Nananom should lead the fight to ensure more transparency to stop corruption", Togbe Afede challenged the chiefs.
Touching on the menace of illegal mining commonly known as galamsey, President
of the National House of Chiefs said, as custodians of the greater part of
lands in their traditional areas, they cannot escape blame for the problem
saying that it is near impossibility for anyone to enter a land without their
consent and that with determination to stop it, the problem could be dealt
with.
The Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Kofi Dzamesi,
announced that the Ministry is seeking the support of corporate bodies to raise
funds to support Christian chiefs wishing to be part of this year’s edition of
the pilgrimage to Israel next month. He disclosed also that government has
opened tender for the procurement of 25 new fleet of vehicles for the National
and regional Houses of Chiefs.
