PARAMOUNT CHIEFS REGISTER FOR GHANA CARD
The
National Identification Authority, NIA, has taken its pilot Ghana Card
registration exercise to the Ashanti region where they are registering members of
the National House of Chiefs.
Registration of the Chiefs, who are from all the
regions of the country is at the instance of the National House of Chiefs for
the NIA to take advantage of the House 3rd General Meeting of the
year.
According to our regional correspondent even though the chiefs have shown
enthusiasm and high interest in procuring their Ghana Card, a greater number of
them could not take advantage of the opportunity following the late
communication to them to come along with required documents for the
registration process.
However, some of them and their subjects as well as some
staff of the National House of Chief’s Secretariat successfully registered and
received their Ghana Cards. Among them are the immediate past President of the
National House, Naa Professor John Nabila, the vice president of the Brong
Ahafo, Nana Bofo Bene, who doubles as the paramount chief of Dwene traditional
area as well as the Mamponghene and 2nd in command of Asanteman,
Daasebre Osei Bonsu.
Nana Bofo Dwene and the Assistant Registrar of the NHC, Nsiah Baafi shared their experiences with Ashanti Today. They were unanimous in the assertions that the process was less time consuming and without any difficulty. Nana Bofo Dwene was particularly excited that he now can discard all other identification cards he used to carry around but will now have to hold only one card, the Ghana Card anywhere he goes.
The Director of Operations of the NIA, Colonel, Retired,
Peter Ghansah, expressed satisfaction with the participation of the traditional
leaders in the registration exercise and said all those who could not register
will be provided another opportunity when their respective regional houses take
their turns.
Colonel Ghansah said the NIA team will register members of the
regional branch of the Ghana Bar Association and the Judicial Service
afterwards before deciding the next port of call.
The vice president of the
National House of Chiefs, Daasebre Kweiku Ewusi, who himself did not have all
the required documents to register, entreated chiefs to rally their subjects to
register for the Ghana Card to authenticate their citizenship.
