ODURO MENSAH, KATE AGYEMANG WIN ASH ZONAL FASTEST HUMAN RACE
Emmanuel
Oduro Mensah of the Ashanti region has won the Seniors’ category of the Ashanti
and Brong Ahafo Zonal Athletics Open Championship.
Kate Agyemang emerged the
winner in the Women category. They will represent the Zone at the grand finale
of the Ghana’s Fastest Human Athletics Championship to be held in Kumasi later
this month.
The Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Zonal Athletics Open Championship is in
search of this year’s Ghana’s Fastest Human which is under the sponsorship of
the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, GNPC.
The seven-year athletics
programme is aimed at discovering and grooming potential athletes to compete
for the nation at all levels. The Championship is opened to males and females
in various age categories in the Under-10, Under-15, Under-18 and Seniors.
Participation is free to all eligible participants who first, must prove their
correct ages and also register officially for recognition.
The Ashanti and
Brong Ahafo Zonal competition saw about 500 athletes converging on the Paa Joe
Stadium of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. While some
of the athletes came from basic schools, others were out of school came as
independent participants with officials from the National Athletics Association
monitoring them closely.
In the Under-10 category which was ran in 60 Metres,
Isaac Beniako from Old Tafo emerged the winner. In the Under-15 category,
Elizabeth Durowaa from Nyankyereniase M/A JHS came first in the girls’ Division
with his colleague from the same school, Harison Nkrumah taking the 1st
position in the boys’ division.
The Under-18 category saw Gifty Oforiwaa from
the Konongo Odumase Senior High School in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality
of Ashanti coming first, while James Oyaa from Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo region
emerging winner of the Boys’ division.
In the main event, which was the
Seniors’ category, the men’s division was won by Emmanuel Oduro Mensah with a
time of 10 point-zero-six Seconds followed by Godwin Gadayi with a time of 10
point-zero-nine seconds, while Charles Okyere came third.
The women’s division
was won by Kate Agyemang with Mary Boakye and Grace Obuor emerging 1st
and 2nd runners up. Each of the first three best athletes in each of
the categories received consolation prizes from the organizers and sponsors.
A
Senior Public Relations Officer of the GNPC, Jonathan Atto Kobbie expressed
satisfaction with the level of competition exhibited by the athletes and said
the organizers are on course to achieving their set objectives for the
championship.
'We will review the programme after the 7th year and decide the future', Mr. Kobbie said.
