6,000 REGISTER IN ASHANTI CONTINUOUS REGISTRATION

About six thousand, 455 persons registered in the Ashanti region in the just ended three day-continuous registration exercise conducted by the Electoral Commission.

Three hundred and 28 of the registrants have been challenged as not being qualified to enter their personal details on Ghana’s electoral roll.

A Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of the EC, Lawrence Sarpong, who released the statistics to Ashanti Today in Kumasi, explained that the challengers are querying the citizenship, residential status and age qualifications of the affected registrants.

The continuous registration exercise was rolled over to last Sunday in parts of the region following the inability of the registration officials to complete the electronic data capturing after taking the personal details on the hardcopy Forms last Saturday.

Mr. Sarpong said the Obuasi Municipality registered the highest number of new voters with 446 with only one challenged case while the Bosome Freho district had the least figure of 13 with no challenge case.

However, the Ejura-Sekyedumase Municipality which registered 121 applicants had the highest number 41 challenged cases.

Mr. Sarpong said all the challenged cases will be considered by the various Elections Review Committees this week to pave the way for exhibition of the Register for the continuous registration exercise next month.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Regional EC Director has given an assurance that the destruction of the Ahafo Ano North District office of the EC at Tepa and all of its contents will not have any serious  impact on the electoral processes in that district even though there will be the need to accommodate the staff for them to continue to work.

According to Mr. Sarpong, all the registration data captured during the Continuous Registration Exercise have already been transmitted into the national database in Accra.
