DR. YAW BAAH IS NEW TUC SECRETARY GENERAL
Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah of the Public Services Workers’ Union has been elected as the new Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress, Ghana, at the just-ended 10th Quadrennial Delegates’ Congress of Ghana’s largest labour movement in Kumasi.
Dr. Yaw Baah has thus taken over from Kofi Asamoah who decided against a
re-election, after serving as the Secretary-General for eight years of two
terms, since 2008.
Dr. Yaw Baah was elected unopposed. Until his election, Dr.
Yaw Baah was the Deputy Secretary-General of the TUC, a position he also held
for eight years.
The election was supervised by officials of the Electoral
Commission led by the Ashanti Regional Director, Serebuor Quaicoo.
A total of
990 delegates were expected to take part in the elections. In the other
contests, Reverend Richard Kwasi Yeboah was elected as the substantive National
Chairman, after holding the fort as the Acting National Chairman for some time.
Reverend Yeboah had the nomination of 16 out of the 17 affiliate Unions of the
TUC with his only contender, Peter Lumor of the Health Services Workers Union
getting the support of only one Union, thereby disqualifying him from the
contest, in line with the election regulations of the movement.
The first
National Vice Chairmanship slot was given to Alex Nyarko of UNICOF unopposed,
while Sister Philomena Aba Sampson of the Ghana Mineworkers Union emerged as
the second National Vice Chairperson also unopposed.
The Congress also elected Joshua
Ansah of the Timber and Wood Workers Union as General Secretary.
A 11-member
Finance Board was also elected to manage finances of the TUC. The Board will
have to elect its own Chairman later.
In his acceptance speech, the new
Secretary-General of the TUC, Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah thanked all the delegates
and affiliate unions of the labour movement for the confidence reposed in him
to lead them.
He thanked also outgone executives of the TUC, particularly Mr.
Kofi Asamoah, for their support and encouragement to him.
Dr. Yaw Baah appealed
for the support and cooperation of all workers especially labour union leaders
during the four year tenure for the new leaders to effectively champion the
cause of workers in Ghana.
