ASHANTI REEWARG INAUGURATED
The Ashanti Regional Elections Early Warning and Response Group, REEWARG has been launched in Kumasi.
It is the
first of regional groups after the National Group launched late last month in
Accra. REEWARG is set up with the primary objective to discuss, develop and
recommend response strategies to violent threats in this year’s general
elections.
The Regional Group is expected to be a source of information on the
impact and progress of the National Early Warning System in the country.
The
Regional Peace Council will take the lead in the functions of the group
comprised of board members of the Council and other eminent persons from
relevant state and non-state institutions to complement government efforts in
the prevention and mitigation of violence before, during and after the general
elections.
Launching the Regional Group, the Chairman of the National Peace
Council, Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante said Ghana’s democratic
credentials are respected the world over in view of the fact that the country
seems to be the oasis of peace in the West Africa sub-region where conflict and
political upheavals are endemic.
He said the elections this year present
another litmus test to the country’s peace and democracy.
However, Most Rev.
Professor Asante noted that current trends are indicative of the fact that
there is a cloud of uncertainty with possible threats to the peaceful
democratic transitions and national stability.
The Ashanti Regional has also
been identified as one of the hot spots for violence and conflict by political
and security analysts and experts.
It is against this background that a Regional
Elections Early Warning and Response Group has been established in Ashanti.
He
urged the eminent members of the Group to be vigilant and do their best to
contribute to the peaceful conduct of the elections.
The Regional Minister,
John Alexander Ackon recalled the Afro barometer report in 2014 which revealed
that the confidence of Ghanaians in key institutions of state is waning.
He
noted however that this trend needs to be arrested in the interest of Ghanaians
and was hopeful that the launch of the Regional Elections Early Warning and
Response Group will go a long way to increase people’s confidence in such
institutions.
