EDUCATE YOUTH TO KNOW THEIR RIGHTS-UEW PROFESSOR
Prof. Obebe addressing the human right advocates |
He has therefore urged various governments
and related institutions as well as non-governmental organizations among other
stakeholders concerned with human right issues to step up efforts in
sensitizing the public to their social, economic, political and religious
rights and how to use them for the rapid transformation of society.
Professor
Obebe made the call at the opening of a three-day Amnesty International Ghana
and Germany Youth Camp at Akyawkrom near Ejisu in Ashanti.
The camp is being
held under the theme; “Empowering the Youth through Human Rights Education for
Responsible Leadership”, with participants being mostly students from tertiary
and second cycle institutions across the country.
Professor Obebe stressed also
the fact that, individuals through proper internalization and socialization
become aware of societal norms and the liberties they have and their limits,
thereby making the family, which is the basic social unit a very important
institution whose role in the socio-psychological growth of people very
important.
According to him, it is when key social institutions such as the
family, school and religious bodies fail to play their roles effectively, that
most forms of human rights abuses including unlawful detention and domestic
violence are perpetrated, with majority of the youth on the receiving end.
The
Director of Amnesty International Ghana, Lawrence Amesu noted the global human
rights movement has resolved to empower the youth with relevant information,
skills and tools through regular capacity building workshops for them to become
advocates of change in their local and global communities.
Mr. Amesu advised
the participants at the Camp to take seriously the knowledge and information
that will be shared while networking for other social benefits.
