CATHOLIC PRIEST CHASTIZES KMA, OTHERS
Rev. Msgn Douglas Peters-Holy Trinity Parish Priest |
A former Vicar General the Kumasi Arch Diocese of the Catholic Church,
Reverend Monsignor Douglas Peters has taken a swipe at the Kumasi Metropolitan
Assembly for its approach towards re-development of markets in the Kumasi
metropolis.
According to him, it is absolutely wrong for the city authorities to
re-develop all the major marketing centres within Kumasi at the same time
without finding better alternatives by way of resettlement for the traders
while the existing facilities are being demolished.
Such an approach, he noted,
is likely to throw the traders out of their legitimate business and deprive
them of their daily bread.
Reverend Monsignor Peters was Preaching the Sermon
at a Sunday Church Service at the Holy Trinity Parish at Sepe Tinpom in Kumasi.
Reverend Monsignor Peters, who is now the Priest in charge of the Holy Trinity Parish,
noted that in most major project contracts, proper resettlement of occupants
are first provided to ensure a healthy re-allocation of the traders before the
original structure could be pulled down for re-construction to take place.
Reverend Monsignor Peters doubted the honesty and commitment of the Kumasi
Metropolitan Assembly to actually re-develop the said markets considering the
Assembly’s past records in similar instances.
The KMA claims it has secured
funds to reconstruct the Kumasi Central Market, Kejetia Lorry Terminal, Atonsu,
Tafo, Kwadaso and other major markets in the Kumasi metropolis for which reason
these trading facilities are being demolished.
The Catholic Priest described
Kumasi as a defiled land saying that the city is now in chaos such that laws
and morality are no longer respected while religion has now become an abomination
to God.
Reverend Monsignor Peters blamed also the upsurge in building water
courses, avoidable human and vehicular congestion, total breakdown of
discipline among the leadership and citizenry with political leaders and the
rich’s disregard for the rights and safety of the vulnerable as compounding the
numerous social problems harsh social economic conditions of the ordinary
people.
Reverend Monsignor Peters noted that the time has now come that
leaders, particularly politicians can no
longer take the ordinary people for
granted since the citizens are becoming enlightened for which no one can
continue to take them for a ride any more.
