MMDAs HAVE NO REASON TO FAIL

STREET NAMING
The Ministry of Local Government and Rural
Development has cautioned that no Metropolitan, Municipal or District Assembly
has a reason to fail to meet the September 30 deadline for the implementation
of the Street Naming and Property Numbering Project as given by the President
last year. According to the Ministry, which is supervising the project,
government has provided all the required material, logistical and technical
assistance the MMDAs to carry out the project. A Deputy sector Minister,
Emmanuel Agyekum, gave the caution after familiarizing himself with the
progress of the implementation of the Street Naming and House Numbering Project
in the Kwabre East and Sekyere Afram Plains districts of Ashanti. According
to the Deputy Minister, the project will accrue a number of benefits to the
state, districts and traditional areas if the project is carefully and fully
implemented. Mr. Agyekum noted that
apart from government hooking up the entire country unto the global satellite
and digital map to market the country and promote tourism, provision of
security and emergency services in any location within the well planned
geographical area will be greatly enhanced. Revenue generation, especially from
property rate collection and tax from previously little known business entities
within their respective jurisdictions will also increase. Mr. Agyekum called for a closer collaboration
among all the key stakeholders like traditional leaders in identifying names
for the streets and also to ensure success of the project. The Deputy Minister
expressed satisfaction with the
progress of work so far done by the Kwabre East and Sekyere Afram Plains
district Assemblies in the implementation processes of the project. On his
part, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Samuel Sarpong noted that the Kwabre
East and Sekyere Afram Plains Districts as being far ahead of all MMDAs in the
implementation of the project. The two district Assemblies have named all
streets, houses and identifiable buildings in their respective district
capitals while efforts are also being made to replicate same in other major
communities within the districts. Dr. Sarpong said the Ashanti Regional
Coordinating Council will continue
to provide support to the MMDAs in the region to implement the project.
