GOVERNMENT FOR PEOPLE FORUM IN KUMASI

As part of its policy to periodically interact with the citizenry to update and explain its policies to them and also take their views on issues of public interest, the government, through the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, has organized the first in the series of regional public fora code-named "Government for People" in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital.
The event carried on the back of the NDC's 2012 electioneering slogan "Your Matter, People Matter, Everybody Matters", was led by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Samuel Sarpong. Also at the forum were the Minister responsible for Education, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, and that of the Communications, Dr. Omane Boamah. Other notable government functionaries who actively participated in the October 14, 2014 forum were Deputy Ministers for Roads and Highways, Hon. Agyei Mensah, Health, Dr. Victor Bampoe and Water Resources, Works and Housing while the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress, Mr. Yaw Obimpeh was as well in attendance. Also present were some of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives in the region with the Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Kojo Bonsu being their leaders while some of the 30 Metropolitan, Municipal Coordinating Directors were also available to grace the occasion.
The Ashanti Regional Minister set the ball rolling by updating the people on development projects, projects and and policies of the government in the region. He emphasized that fact that the government has and will not discriminate against the people of Ashanti for any reason. Notable among the projects being implemented in the region by the government are classroom blocks at all levels of formal education, thus from the basic through second cycle to the tertiary level. Health facilities are also being provided with the start of the construction of the 120-bed District Hospital at Adansi Fomena as a case in point. Roads are also being attended to with a mention of the continuation of the famous Sofo-Line Interchange which is now at an advanced stage of construction. He disclosed regrettably however, that  68 confirmed cases of cholera have so far been recorded at health facilities in the region out of which two people have died. The epidemic is however under control.He assured also that the Regional Coordinating Council is working closely with other state and private organizations to prevent the outbreak of Ebola in the region. In the event of its outbreak, plans have also been made to contain.
The Minister for Education, Proffessor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang touched on issues pertaining to her jurisdiction. She challenged people, particularly her political opponents to stop tagging candidates of the 2013/2014 WASSCE who could not get the required grade to enter tertiary schools as useless since that could have serious negative psychological consequence on the children. She noted cleared the speculations that candidates who sat for this examination worse than their predecessors. According to her, even though the number of candidates who sat for last year's WASSCE were made up iof two streams of the four and three-year Senior High School students, 78 thousand of them could pass in six or more subjects while the number of candidates presented for this year's were only from the three year SHS out of which more than 68 thousand had grades that can qualify them for admission into tertiary education saying " how can anyone therefore say that this year candidates performed worse than those of last year?", she challenged.
