DOVVSU DECRIES POSTING OF NUDE PICTURES

The Ashanti Regional Coordinator of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit, DOVVSU, of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Benjamin Dokurugu says the emergence of posting of nude photographs of some people through the social and new media has become the new challenge to the fight against crime as well as particularly domestic violence.

This challenge, according to the DOVVSU Coordinator, requires that the Unit also repositions and re-strategizes itself to tackle effectively. Speaking to Ashanti Today in Kumasi, DSP Dokurugu explained the serious problems that the new sophisticated crime poses to not just the individuals and families involved in such acts, but the national socio-economic development.

He said apart from the victims losing their self-worth, confidence, serious emotional and psychological stability, their ability to work to their optimal best is also undermined.

In certain instances too, such cases lead to homelessness, broken relationships as a well as loss of jobs.

DSP Dokurugu noted that it is to adequately prepare the DOVVSU personnel for such crimes, that a training programme has been planned to upgrade the personal and professional skills, confidence and competence of staff of the Unit to improve on their capabilities.

They are to be trained in areas such as investigating sexual offences, how to properly draft a charge sheet for prosecution, Police Report Writing and management of crime scenes.

DSP Dokurugu said about 150 of the staff will benefit from the training programme for a period and with experienced senior police officers as the resource persons.

He expressed the hope that the training programme would help to boost the morale and self-confidence of the DOVVSU staff to enhance their performance and success rate in the prosecution of domestic violence cases.
