There was what could be described as a tragi-comedy at the premises of the Kumasi High Court complex this morning, Wednesday 24th February , when part of the buildings caught fire.  There was a melee at Circuit Court Four which is very close to the building where the fire started as all the people around at the time had to run for dear life.  The Judge, Prosecutors, Court officials and litigants who were within Circuit Court Four had to find their way out of the Court room bringing proceedings to an abrupt end around 11 am.  The fire totally destroyed the Chambers of the Judge of High Court Five and a Circuit Court Judge who were at the time in their respective Courts hearing cases that had been brought before them.  The timely arrival of personnel and fire tenders from the KMA Fire Station which is just a walking distance from the Court complex, was enough to confine the ravaging fire to just the two Judge Chambers.  In effect, the two Chambers were ...

  The Asante Bekwai Circuit Court, presided over by Frederick Nawura, has remanded into Police custody a man said to be a dismissed soldier, Martin Atinga Awagra who is standing trial for four counts.  His three suspected accomplices named only as Ernest, Aboagye and Yaw, are however on the run as the Police pursue them to also face the law.  The case will be called again at the Circuit Court on the 8 th of next  month. Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture in charge of Livestock, Dr. Hanna Bissiw says Ghana’s policy on the control of Avian Influenza is in accordance with the World Health Organization for Animal Health Terrestrial code 2012.  These are the stamping out of infected and in-contact birds, safe disposal of carcasses and in-contact materials and thorough decontamination of the infected premises, using carbon dioxide.     She said Government recognizes the critical role the poultry industry is contributing as a catalyst for economic transformation.  Hence the swift and effective containment of the Obuasi Avian Influenza in June last year, using a novel water based foam technology.  Dr. Bissiw announced this in an address read for her at the second in a series of training workshop on the control of Avian Influenza and other emerging diseases taking place in Kumasi. The Police at Jamasi in the Sekyere South district of Ashanti have arrested three persons who were believed to be part of a mob that attacked and vandalized the Jamasi Police Station yesterday, Thursday February 18 .  The three suspects have been transferred to the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters where they are being held by the Police to assist in investigation.  Speaking to Ashanti Today in Kumasi, the Acting Asante Mampong Divisional Commander, Superintendent Bismark Agyapong explained that the three, all men, allegedly joined other irate residents of Jamasi at about 5 pm yesterday to demand that the Police release suspects who were being held by the Police in connection with the suspected murder of three women at Jamasi.  According to Superintendent Agyapong, when the Police refused to give in to the demand of the mob, they became annoyed and vandalized part of the Police Station.  He said the mob was able to cause damage to the Counter, the winds...

A political group known as JDM Ladies headquartered in Kumasi has encouraged the Chairperson of the Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, to remain resolute and focused on discharging her duties as determined by the constitution of Ghana.  JDM Ladies is as well urging Mrs. Osei not to be distracted by pressure or intimidation but rather focus on delivering a credible election which is free, fair and transparent.      The Founder and President of JDM Ladies, Madam Mary Armah gave the advice at the first gathering of the group in Kumasi.  Madam Armah commended the immediate past Minister for Transport, Mrs. Dzifa Attivor for her courageously accepting responsibility for the controversial rebranding of 116 new Metro Mass Buses and resigning her post.  Madam Armah also thanked the NDC for giving President John Dramani Mahama the opportunity to lead the party for the second time to contest this year’s Presidential elections.  ...
