SIGN LANGUAGE BIBLE IN GHANA VERY SOON-BSG ASSURES





The Bible Society of Ghana is to translate the Holy Bible into both Sign Language and Braille to serve the spiritual needs of persons with hearing and sight impairment. Additionally, the Society is translating the Bible into more local dialects including Efutu Senyase, Okere and Bono languages to encourage access and reading of the sacred book. 

The Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Oversight Committee of the Bible Society of Ghana, Apostle Dr. Isaac Osei Boakye Yiadom, made this known to GBCNews in Kumasi at the launch of this year’s edition of the Bible Week celebration.

“The projects that we’re undertaking is the sign language Bible. We’re undertaking a bible that will help people who are dumb and deaf so that they can also read the bible through the sign language. We also do Braille Bible and also, we want to do Bible for people from Ewutu Senya area, from Okere area, Bono and then Larteh”, he emphasized.

Apostle Dr. Boakye Yiadom disclosed that, in addition to the existing nine local dialects the Bible has been translated into, the Bible Society of Ghana is to translate the holy book into Sign Language, Braille to serve the spiritual and knowledge needs of the hearing and sight impaired, more local dialects are being considered.

Apostle Dr. Boakye Yiadom explained that translating the Holy Bible is very demanding in terms of time and human resources which requires that more members of the Christian faith with the means realize the need to contribute generously towards the mission.

Established in 1968, the Bible Society of Ghana has a mission to ensure every home has a copy of the Holy Bible. This, the Society has been religiously pursuing over the years through translation of the original Hebrew Bible into various languages and distribution of same. 

The translation is done by dedicated persons with deep understanding of the original language of the holy book.

 In Ghana, the Society has translated the Bible into nine of the prominent local dialects for easy understanding by as many speakers and indigenes of those dialects as possible to help them serve God well. Among the already translated languages are Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi, Damgbe, Sefwi and Ewe. 

In the Ashanti region, apart from the lean permanent staff working at the Secretariat of the Society, it also has a team of volunteers and over 100 distributors of the Bible who help in advancing the goals of spreading the word of God. 

As another strategy in the pursuit of this responsibility that the Society has set aside the first week in February every year as the ‘Bible Week’ to create enhance awareness about the availability and importance of the Holy Bible to particularly members of the Christendom through various outreach activities. This year’s Bible Week is on the theme: “God’s Unchanging Word; Hope for All”. 

Among the activities scheduled for this celebration are interaction with selected churches, Drama, Bible Reading Marathon, Concert, Symposia and Church services all aimed to proclaiming the Holy Word of God. 

The Week-long celebration in the Ashanti region was officially launched at the Amakom Congregation of the Seventh Day Adventists Church, SDA by the Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Oversight Committee of the Bible Society of Ghana, Apostle Dr. Isaac Osei Boakye Yiadom who was at the head of a delegation from the Society. 

The launch was incorporated into the usual weekly church service of the Congregation. As part of the launch, members of the Bible Society of Ghana’s delegation took turns to interact with the Congregants on the importance and sacredness of the bible to the Christian faith and why every believer must own a copy. 

They also prayed for increased faith of Christians and interceded for the nation as well while using the forum to encourage the congregants to register to join the Society.

The Minster in Charge of the Amakom Congregation of the SDA Church, Pastor Kwabena Boakye Yiadom, described the work of the Bible Society of Ghana as very important toward advancement of the work of God for which his Church is ready to support it both financially, materially and morally.

Pastor Boakye Yiadom said “It’s been quite good. Fortunately, they’ve been able to translate the Bible into nine or ten local languages and we hope that they’d be able to do more. And that’s the more reason why we even support them in everything whether financially or in kind or whatever way we can support them because we think that they are doing a good job.”
