NSS TARGETS MAIZE EXPORT

Ashanti regional Secretariat of the National Service Scheme, NSS, has projected to export maize to Ghana’s neigbouring countries this year, aside from producing enough to help the School Feeding and Free Senior High School programmes with subsidized produce. T

o this end, the NSS is increasing its maize production from the 450 acres last year to 850 this year under the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative.

The Ashanti Regional Director of the NSS, Alex Opoku Mensah, who made this known to Ashanti Today in Kumasi, disclosed also that, one of the strategies towards realization of the projection will be the adoption of drones in the application of agro-chemicals and fertilizer to reduce direct human intervention.

Mr. Opoku Mensah noted that last year, the NSS harvested about 11 thousand mini bags of maize which were supplied at highly subsidized prices to the School Feeding and Free Senior High School secretariats in the region.

The NSS’ Regional Director said also that the Scheme is close to building its own storage facility that will store and bag maize which is currently being done at the Ejura Farms so as to reduce the cost of storage.

Mr. Opoku Mensah expressed gratitude to the Ejura Traditional Council for willingly providing additional land for the NSS’s project. He noted that in appreciation for the gesture, his outfit is also fencing the Municipal Hospital at Ejura to ward off encroachment and also sinking mechanized bore holes for at the facility to ensure reliable water supply.
