MANHYIA JUSTIFIES ASANTEHENE @ 20 CELEBRATION
The
Manhyia Palace has justified the celebration of the 20th anniversary
of the enthronement of the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, as the 16th
occupant of the Golden Stool.
Addressing the media at the 2nd in the
series of such events during the commemoration, the Chief Linguist or
Akyeamehene of the Asantehene, Nana Nsuoase Poku Agyemang explained that Otumfuo
Osei Tutu has achieved a lot not only for Asanteman but Ghana as a whole, since
his ascension to the throne in 1999.
Nana Nsuoase Poku Agyemang mentioned for
instance, the significant contribution of Otumfuo Osei Tutu in the restoration
of lasting peace to the Dagbon traditional area in the Northern region, the
construction of the new Kejetia Market complex, formal education, healthcare,
water and sanitation as well as the amicable out of court settlement of the
numerous chieftaincy and land disputes that undermined the chieftaincy
institution before his assumption of traditional leadership.
In addition to
those achievements, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, the Akyeamehene noted, has also helped
to project positively the image of Ghana among the comity of nations through
his speeches and visits to international fora.
It is in appreciation of these
that President Akufo-Addo will be honouring the Asantehene with a State Dinner
on the 26th of this month to coincide with the exact date of his enthronement, the first in Ghana’s history for any
personality, while high profile national and international personalities will
also be gracing the main event of the celebration, which is Akwasidai Kesie on
the 21st also of this month at the Manhyia Palace.
Touching on
coming events on the anniversary calendar, Nana Nsuoase Poku Agyemang invited
members of the public to another spirit-filled spectacular public performance
by the traditional priests in Ashanti and beyond constituting the Asantehene’s Nsumankwaa
on Friday at the forecourt of the Manhyia Palace.
Meanwhile, the ban on funeral
rites in the Ashanti region takes effect from next Monday, the 8th
of this month and ends on the 29th. In a related development, the
official cloth for the 20th anniversary celebration of Otumfuo Osei
Tutu’s enthronement has been released and already on sale in Kumasi.
The cloth,
specially designed in four different colours and Adinkra symbols, has various
pictures of the Asantehene in his regalia, embossed.
