'LEARN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE'-CJ URGES GIRL STUDENTS

The Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo has urged the youth to make the best of their years learning as much as they can, about as many things as they can.

This way, they will not be ignorant about anything. She gave the advice at the Lady Chief Justice’s Special Mentoring Programme in Kumasi for some selected schools in the Ashanti region.

The Chief Justice’s Mentoring Programme was instituted by Mrs. Justice Theodora Wood in 2007 to expose school pupils to the functions of the Judiciary and instil in them virtues of patriotism and selflessness to country.

The Mentorship programme under the theme, "I Pledge Myself to the Service of Ghana” is to remind and build up the character of the current youthful generation on values of voluntarism, integrity and honesty, love for country as they matured into responsible adults.

It was initially held in the Greater Accra region but has now spread to some other regions including Ashanti with the aim to impact more students.

Justice Sophia Akuffo advised students to make good use of their time on the internet by reading about new things. She said they must always remember the values of respect, hard work, honesty, self-discipline, service and integrity in their quest to serve mankind. She urged them to make a commitment to the country be it health, peace, stability and environmental integrity.

Bantamahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia who represented the Asantehene commended the Chief Justice for laudable initiatives being adopted to settle disputes and ensure that justice is brought closer to the people at an appropriate setting.

He further commended the Chief Justice for widening the scope of the programme to other regions, saying there is no better way to learn from the professionals. He promised the commitment of the Asantehene towards the programme.

In all, 10 schools participated in the Special Mentoring Programme.

At the Senior High School Level were Konongo-Odumase, Saint Louis, Kumasi Academy, Kumasi Anglican and Serwaa Nyarko Girls Senior High Schools, while at the Junior High level were Abraham Lincoln, Amakom Abrotia M/A, Konadu Yiadom M/A, Saint Anne’s Anglican and Saint Theresa’s R/C Schools. During the interaction segment, the students were sensitized to issues pertaining to their civic responsibilities, how they can pursue a career in the legal profession and how to make profitable use of the internet.
