ASHANTI NDC AFFIRMS CONFIDENCE IN OLD EXECUTIVES
Delegates
at the Ashanti regional Conference of the opposition National Democratic
Congress, NDC, opted for a blend of old and new Executives to manage the party
in the next four years.
At the end of the hotly contested Regional Chairmanship
challenge, the immediate past Vice Chairman, Andrew Nana Kwasi was promoted to
become the new Regional Chairman. Out of the one thousand, 338 delegates, 669
voted for Nana Kwasi with 611 others voting for Joseph Yamin, a former Regional
Secretary who also once served as a Deputy Youth and Sports Minister.
With his
election, Nana Kwasi replaces Yaw Owusu Obimpeh who stepped down as the
Regional Chairman after two terms. The other two candidates in the Chairmanship
race, .T. K. Braimah, and Kayad Adu Gyamfi could only manage 18 and eight votes
respectively.
The other keen race for the Regional Secretaryship, the former
Deputy Secretary and a Senior Lecturer at the Kumasi Technical University,
Kwame Zu polled 757 of the total votes cast to also gain promotion to become
the new Regional Secretary defeating his only contender, Evans Amankwaah who
had 583 votes with three rejected ballots.
Isham Alhassan had 892 votes to win
a landslide victory as the new Regional Organizer over three other candidates.
Alhaji Salisu Musah had 448 votes to emerge as the Regional Vice Chairman after
beating six others to the race.
For the other positions, Hopeson Keku took the
Treasurer slot, Abass Nurudeen, Communications Officer with Alex Asafo-Agyei as
his Deputy. The others are Prince Atta, Deputy Treasurer, Matthew Njourkone,
Deputy Secretary, Alhaji Bashiru Amissah, Deputy Organizer with Sumaila Aliu
elected unopposed as the Regional Zongo Caucus Coordinator.
The party had a week
earlier, chosen the Youth and Women Organizers with their respective Deputies
at separate Conferences in line with the party’s Constitution. The Elections
were conducted by a team of officials from the Electoral Commission led by its
Regional Director, Serebuor Quarcoe while the winners were sworn-in by the
General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.
