NO TRAIN, NO BOANKRA INLAND PORT-RM
The Ashanti
Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, says until the railway system is revamped
and extended to Boankra in the Ashanti region, the objectives for
implementation of the Boankra Inland Port project will not be achieved.
According to him, the Inland Port Project which was initiated by the previous
NPP government, aims at reducing congestion at the Ports as well as the volume
of heavy duty vehicles that use the roads to and from the country’s ports.
This
is to protect the roads from destruction by these articulated trucks that
either send or cart goods from the ports from and to Ghana’s landlocked
countries.
Addressing the media in Kumasi, the Regional Minister said it will
not be prudent to allow the same heavy duty vehicles to bring the goods from
the Tema or Takoradi ports to the Boankra Inland Port in the Ashanti region for
other trucks to also cart the goods to the landlocked countries using the same
roads being protected.
Such a practice, Mr. Osei Mensah said, would defeat the
original plan for the project. He therefore lauded a recent pronouncement by
the Minister for Railway Development that the rail lines will be extended to
the project site.
Touching on other issues, the Regional Minister disclosed
that very soon, he will call for the Licenses of all small scale gold miners in
the Ashanti region.
This, he explained, will enable him to differentiate among
those who are engaging in lawful mining and galamsey.
Mr. Osei Mensah
noted that, in accordance with the NPP’s 2016 Manifesto, steps will be taken to
regularize and streamline galamsey activities in the region to help protect the
environment while creating employment for the people.
He stressed that, as
political head of the region, his resolve is to leave a legacy for posterity
and that he will seek to do only what is right and just for the larger society
and not to try to please any individual or group of people.
He therefore
appealed for the support and cooperation of all the residents to enable him to
succeed.
