WASSCE BEGINS AT ALL CENTRES
Ashanti region is this year presenting a
total of 67 thousand, 513 candidates for the West African Senior Schools
Certificate examinations, WASSCE, representing an eight point-seven per cent
increase over last year’s figure.
The figure also constitutes 23 point-three
per cent of the overall national figure of 289 thousand, 2017. The candidates
are from 178 public and private schools.
The number is made up of 34 thousand,
198 boys and 33 thousand, 315 girls who are sitting for the exam at 122
WAEC-designated centres spread across 29 out of the 30 administrative districts
of the region.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, accompanied
Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Mary Owusu-Achiaw, has visited some of the
Centres to observe the conduct of the exercise and also to learn at first hand
the conditions under which the exam is being written.
At the Prempeh College where
a total of 822 candidates from three schools were expected to sit for the
Integrated Science Paper, only one candidate of Prempeh College was absent when
Paper Two was being written.
However, at
the old Assembly Hall Centre where 186 candidates from two private schools were
scheduled to write the Paper, as many as 22 of them were said to be absent for unexplained
reasons.
At the Afua Kobi Ampem Girls Senior High School at Trabuom in the
Atwima Kwanwoma district, a total of 808 candidates from the school were
supposed to present themselves for the Paper. However, three of them were
absent.
But the most worrying spectacle that met the Regional Minister was the
inability of two of the candidates present to write the exam.
One of them shed tears uncontrollably with the other one refusing to respond to questions by the Regional Minister.
The Headmistress,
Madam Agnes Dadson, blamed their inability to write the paper due to
psychological challenges. She said they would be allowed to visit their parents
after the Paper.
At the Toase Senior
High School in the Atwima Nwagya district, all the one thousand and 17
candidates expected at the Centre for the Paper were present with no major
problem encountered.
At the Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School in Kumasi, the
Headmistress, Madam Asunde Eshun Fameyeh, said three out of the 668 candidates
could not be present to write the Paper for various reasons.
At all the centres visited, there was Police
presence to maintain law and order.
The Regional Director of Education, Mrs.
Mary Owusu-Achiaw, expressed worry about the condition of the girl candidates
at the Afua Kobi Ampem SHS Centre and pleaded with parents to team up with
school authorities to always ensure their wards are in good health ahead of
such important exercise as the WASSCE.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon
Osei Mensah, expressed satisfaction with the conduct and comportment of both the
candidates and officials as well as the atmosphere under which the exam was
being written.
He advised the candidates to abstain from any form of examination malpractice since that could ruin their future.
