KSI DEMONSTRATORS CONDEMNED FOR 'ATTACKING' ASANTEHENE
The Concerned Youth of Asante has strongly condemned participants of yesterday, Wednesday's demonstration in Kumasi dubbed “Baamu Yaada” for allegedly attempting to invade the Adum Stool House where the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, was performing a customary rite.
The Asantehene, in tandem with Asante custom,
visits the Adum Stool House to perform certain rituals on the sacred Wednesday
or ‘Awukudai’ which coincided with the street protest.
The demonstration was
organized jointly by the Ashanti Regional office of the NPP and its affiliate
pressure groups such as ‘Let My Vote Count Alliance’ and the ‘Movement for Change’ to pressurize the
Electoral Commission to clean the Voters’ Register before the November
Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
In the course of the protest march
and on reaching the Adum Stool House, some of the protesters allegedly tried to
veer into the House for no apparent reason and it took the Asantehene’s
personal security detail to stop them at the entrance.
A statement signed by
the President of the Concerned Youth of Asante, Nana Agyenim Boateng, noted
that the unprovoked action of the demonstrators to intrude the strictly private
and cultural rites by the overlord of the Asante kingdom is very reprehensible and
uncalled for.
The action, the Association described also as very shameful and
must be condemned by all peace loving members of the society.
The statement
again raised serious issues with the choice of ‘Awukudai’ by the organizers to
carry out their street protest, saying that it is an affront to the sanctity of
the occasion and should never be repeated.
