STUDENTS SECURITY, SAFETY, OUR PRIORITY-KNUST ASSURES PARENTS/GUARDIANS

Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, has assured parents/guardians and prospective 1st year students of an elaborate residential accommodation measures already in place for fresh students this academic year. According to the management, apart from the six traditional Halls with a combine bed capacity of about nine thousand, there are three other Halls on campus thus Hall Seven, SRC’s and the Brunei Complex which add up to the on-campus accommodation. 

Discussing matters of fresh admissions and students’ accommodation for the new academic year on GBC’s Garden City Tv’s ‘Anopa Bosuo’ Morning Show in Kumasi monitored by Ashanti Today, KNUST’s Deputy Registrar in charge of University Relations Office, URO, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, disclosed that, in addition to the available on-campus accommodation, management has entered into agreement with operators of about 480 private Hostels within the catchment communities of the institution to complement the internal arrangement. These facilities are also available for selection by the prospective students on the same official accommodation portal as that of the Halls saying that these private hostels are of various grades which cost commensurate with their rates according to the available facilities. 

The URO said, management considers safety and security of its students as a major priority hence various detailed internal and external arrangement to safeguard the lives of students on and outside campus. “We have donated street lights in all the areas where our students stay”, Dr. Bekoe said. “We have helped to establish Watch Dog Committees which members are always in these communities in plain cloths to protect the students”, he continued. 

 Dr. Bekoe disclosed again that, KNUST has donated two pickup vehicles to the KNUST District Police to augment their own and in addition, supply them with fuel periodically to run patrols. Similarly, he noted, management sends bulk ‘Security Tips’ to all students to create awareness about how to stay safe. He advised the girls to avoid visiting male student rooms unaccompanied urging them to ‘make good use of the various study or leisure spaces dotted on campus for private relaxation, leisure or interaction’ since Wi Fi is very active. 

 Dr. Bekoe entreated parents/guardians to show keen interest in not only the studies but also the welfare of their wards while in school to know about their personal and academic records. He warned, that management of the university is determined to expose and punish any student who flouts the school’s regulations and in appropriate cases, hand them over to the state to subject them to due process of law.
 

Meanwhile, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, has cut down its admission of first year students for the 2023 academic year by about eight thousand. The university this year, has offered admission to around 15 thousand applicants down from the 23 thousand new students admitted for the 2022 academic year. This brings to around 85 thousand the total students population of the KNUST. 

 The Deputy Registrar in charge of University Relations, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, who disclosed this to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation explained, that the decision to reduce students’ intake this year is to reduce also pressure on the available facilities as well as the huge burden on lecturers. Dr. Bekoe made this known when he appeared on GBC’s Kumasi-based all Twi oriented Garden City Television An)pa B)suo Morning Show which discussed matters relating to the 2023 admission of the KNUST.

 On students’ residential accommodation, the University Relations Officer assured that, the university’s management has adopted a pragmatic elaborate strategy to ensure that the greater majority of the about 15 thousand first year students secure places of abode without much stress ahead of their eventual reporting on the 14th of this month.
